What is Pour Over Coffee?

The term pour over is used to describe a host of different brew methods to make better home coffee. Any pour over coffee brewing uses some form of percolator. Most coffee lovers use a Chemex or Colador as their favorite pour over coffee maker.

Percolation means that water passes through a bed of coffee grinds by gravity, extracting flavor along the way. Every percolator has some sort of material to filter the coffee grinds. This coffee filter is the most important factor to control when aiming to make better pour over coffee. The match between your coffee grinds and your filter determines the quality of your pour over coffee. Better pour over coffee needs a custom coffee grind for whatever your pour over coffee filter you decide to use.

There are three types of coffee filters to make pour over coffee. Chemex pour over coffee filters are mostly paper filters. But we believe that metal mesh filters make better chemex coffee. A colador pour over coffee maker uses a cloth filter, which is a more traditional method of making pour over coffee.

Pour over coffee by peak flavor is naturally sweet, mild and creamy

Making Better Pour Over Coffee

Better pour over coffee is naturally sweet, mild and creamy. To make better pour over coffee, we select naturally sweet coffee bean blends and roast slow for more caramel, honey and vanilla aroma. As for all our home coffee, we custom grind each coffee order to fit your pour over coffee filter.

If you are using a Chemex or other percolator with a metal coffee filter, you will want to try coarser custom coffee grinds for more creaminess. If you are using a Chemex percolator with paper filter, you will want to have a finer grind for a cleaner, more intense pour over coffee. If you are using a pour over coffee percolator with a cloth filter such as the Colador, you should use a medium coarse grind to allow some of the oils to add richness and a fuller mouthfeel to your pour over.

we customize our coffee grinds for each coffee order, no mater what coffee maker you prefer. Read more about how we customize our coffee grinds by coffee maker: espresso machine, French press, reusable k cups for Keurig coffee maker, drip coffee maker, moka pot or Vietnamese phin coffee.

Naturally Sweet Pour Over Coffee

Naturally sweet pour over coffee requires a custom coffee bean blend with naturally sweet coffee beans, roasted with extended caramelization to optimize caramel, honey and vanilla aromas.

For your home coffee maker, we deliver fresh roasted coffee grinds to match the filter in your pour over coffee. A little finer for a paper Chemex coffee filter. Medium coarse for a Colador and coarse for a metal pour over coffee filter.

Pour Over Coffee Filters

The most common percolator filters are paper, cloth or fine metal mesh. Historically, everybody used cloth coffee filters to make pour over coffee. Nowadays, the Colador is a popular cloth coffee filter in coffee origin countries throughout Latin America. The most popular modern paper coffee filter is Melitta but there are many different and better paper coffee filters available.

The invention of the electric coffee machine or electric drip coffee maker during the mid-20th century made pour over coffee a thing of the past. But in the last 10 years, pour over coffee has made a comeback because with the right coffee bean blend, a fresh coffee roast, and custom coffee grinds, pour over coffee can provide a clean and fresh coffee which is popular amongst many coffee lovers.

With so much choice, it is sometimes hard to find the right coffee to make the best pour over coffee. At Peak Flavor Coffee, we make better pour over coffee easy. Discover our customized coffee blends, roasts and grinds for Chemex or discover better pour over coffee here.

Benefit of a Metal Mesh Pour Over Coffee Filter

A metal mesh pour over coffee filter delivers creamy, rich, and mild pour over coffee. Like the metal mesh for French Press Coffee makers, a metal pour over coffee filter only removes the larger pieces in the coffee grinds during percolation. The resulting pour over coffee might look a little cloudy but it will have added body, creaminess, and richness from some of the coffee oils and suspended coffee grounds that made it through the metal mesh coffee filter. When washed after usage, a metal mesh pour over coffee filter is easy to use and can last for years.

At Peak Flavor Coffee, we make better pour over coffee easy. We custom blend naturally sweet coffee beans, specifically for your pour over coffee. To get naturally sweet pour over coffee, we employ Italian coffee roasting with extended caramelization. After custom grinding for your metal mesh pour over coffee filter, we guarantee delivery within 8 days of the roast date, so you can enjoy your pour over coffee just when it reaches best or Peak Flavor.

Benefits of a Paper Pour Over Coffee Filter

A paper pour over coffee filter with the right coffee grinds yields a clean, naturally sweet, and mild coffee.

Chemex pour over coffee often uses paper coffee filters. Bleached paper coffee filters produce the cleanest type of filter coffee from your home percolator. Paper coffee filters strain out all the suspended coffee grinds, as well as the natural coffee oils, which sometimes hold a lot of good coffee flavors. Using the right bean blend is important if you want those flavors to dissolve and pass through the paper coffee filter. The resulting pour over coffee is a clear liquid with an estimated 6% coffee strength. If you perfectly match the coffee grinds to the paper coffee filter in your Chemex, your pour over coffee will not be too clean or too watery.

At Peak Flavor Coffee, we make better home coffee easy. We custom blend naturally sweet coffee beans, specifically for your Chemex pour over coffee. To get naturally sweet Chemex coffee, we employ Italian roasting with extended caramelization. Benefits of a Cloth Pour Over Coffee Filter

A cloth coffee filter yields a richer and cleaner coffee, which I prefer to paper filter coffee.

Cloth has been used to filter coffee for a very long time. Like a paper coffee filter, a pour over coffee cloth will strain out the suspended coffee grounds but it does allow the natural coffee oils to pass through the filter, adding a richer and fuller mouthfeel to a clean and intense coffee.

To get better pour over coffee in a cloth filter or colador, you need to customize the coffee grinds to be medium fine (700 microns).

At Peak Flavor Coffee, we custom blend naturally sweet coffee beans, specifically for cloth filter colador coffee. To get naturally sweet pour over coffee, we employ Italian roasting with extended caramelization. After custom grinding for your cloth coffee filter, we guarantee delivery within 8 days of the roast date, so you can enjoy your colador pour over coffee just when it reaches best or Peak Flavor.

Fresh Roasted Pour Over Coffee

Recognizing freshness of the coffee roast for your pour coffee is easy: it’s the bloom as you pour the hot water on your coffee grinds. Just like with espresso crema, you can easily recognize a fresh roasted pour over coffee when you get abundant coffee bloom while pouring hot water on the coffee grinds.

Coffee blooms more abundant when some of the naturally volatile aromas are still present in the coffee grinds. During the first 8-14 days after coffee roasting, the roast goes through a natural process of degassing. These natural aromas or gasses form the basis for blooming. Older coffee roasts have mostly degassed with the passage of time and blooming is less abundant.

At Peak Flavor, we make it easy to get abundant blooming because we only deliver fresh roasted pour over coffee.

Coffee Grinds to fit any Pour Over Coffee Filter

The best coffee grinds for your pour over coffee maker depend on the coffee filter.

If you use a paper filter to make a Chemex pour over coffee, use a medium coarse coffee grind of about 850m microns. We grind Chemex paper filter coffee at 14 out of 20 on the Burr grinder scale.

If you use a Colador cloth filter to make your home pour over coffee, use a slightly coarser coffee grind. We use a custom Colador grind of about 900 microns at 15 of 20 on the burr grinder scale.

For a metal mesh pour over coffee filter, we grind coarse at about 1050 microns or 18 out of 20 on the burr grinder scale.

At Peak Flavor, we make it easy to find the perfect coffee match for your home pour over coffee maker.
